San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory
Instrument Specialist
Become part of a team of outstanding music educators and staff
who provide high quality music instruction and performance experiences
to Southern California's finest young musicians. The San Diego
Youth Symphony and Conservatory is the 6th oldest youth orchestra
program in the United States, serving over 450 students between
the ages of 8 and 25. Concerts are performed at Regional Concert
Halls, and community venues. Rehearsals are held in Balboa Park
and Marshall Middle School, Scripps Ranch.
The Instrument Specialist is responsible for weekly rehearsal
assistance and sectional work for the ensembles under the direction
of the Conductors. The Instrument Specialist reports to the Conductors
and the Artistic Director. Other responsibilities include assisting
with auditions, annual concerts, community outreach concerts,
attending staff meetings, and other staff activities.
Candidates should:
- Have a high level of knowledge in all wind, brass and percussion
instruments
- Have experience working with diverse student musicians of varying
ages and experience levels
- Possess exemplary pedagogy, and teaching skills
- Have significant teaching experience at middle and high school
level working with large and small groups of students in a rehearsal
setting
- Possess strong communication skills
- Be able to work in support of the goals established by the Conductors
and Artistic Director
- Have the ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve
at their highest level
The Instrument Specialist position is a part time position averaging
6-8 hours per week primarily on Saturdays and weekends. This is
a non-exempt position paid at an hourly rate. The position is
seasonal from late August through early June. Attendance at all
Saturday rehearsals, all dress rehearsals and all concerts is
required.
