La Jolla Music Society presents Discovery Series Prelude

SDYS musician Justin Wu will perform at 2pm and artist Hanzhi Wang, accordion will perform at 3pm.
About the 2pm Prelude recital
Justin Wu, age 15, is an Ovation program leadership cellist and has been playing cello for four years. He currently studies privately with cellist Ruslan Biryukov. He has participated in SDYS’ annual summer International Youth Symphony program and also performs in chamber groups including the San Diego Youth Quartet+, and has earned first place awards in major regional competitions including the MTAC Concerto Competition, MTAC VOCE Competition, and the Satori Strings Contest.
- Luigi Boccherini – Sonata No. 6 in A Major, 1st and 2nd movements
- Frederic Chopin – Etude, Op. 25 arranged for cello by Alexander Glazunov
- Camille Saint-Saëns – Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, 3rd movement
Musical Preludes are held on stage and open to ticket buyers before all Discovery Series concerts and select SummerFest performances. Musical Preludes give young musicians the platform to develop their musicianship and technique in front of a live audience, which in turn bolsters the confidence needed for auditions, competitions and future performances.
About the 3pm Concert
Praised for her captivating stage presence and performances that are technically and musically masterful, the groundbreaking young musician Hanzhi Wang is the first accordionist to win a place on the roster of Young Concert Artists in its 58-year history, and her hour-long interview and performance on the 2,145th episode of New York WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase marked the first appearance of a solo accordionist on the program. She will be performing the following repertoire:
