It’s amazing how quickly students gain proficiency and confidence in working with instruments – and each other – in The Opus Project, part of SDYS’ community partnership program that brings music education opportunities to schools. In the Chula Vista Elementary School District, brand new musicians at Los Altos Elementary School performed an afterschool mini Thanksgiving concert for their fellow students – having never played their instruments before August!

We’re so proud of them all and hope you enjoy this performance of the Ant Song, Winter Time in Russia, See the Little Monkey, Rolling Along, and Bow River by the students and led by SDYS Teaching Artists Marife Biares, Michael Tagart, Jordan Kuspa, and Jessandra Kono.

The SDYS Youth Leadership Council (YLC) brings together young leaders from across SDYS programs to connect and contribute to the future of SDYS. A key focus area for the group is the recognition and celebration of the diverse makeup of our students, their families, and our wider community, through the music of those cultures and its composers.

To celebrate Filipino Heritage month in October, the YLC has produced a virtual mini-concert celebrating Filipino culture, its contributions to the arts, and its spread in our local communities. Directed by YLC member, Nya Delcastillo, it features performances from SDYS musicians, friends, and families. Ms. Delcastillo shares, "To us Filipinos, representation is very important. Through this concert, SDYS and the YLC can show the instrumental aspects of traditional Filipino music and collaborate with other Filipino figures in our communities."
We hope you enjoy the concert! Learn more about SDYS’ Youth Leadership Council at sdys.org/ylc
